thumb_rnli_bottleRound Table have launched an 'SOS' message in a giant bottle as part of an epic relay challenge that aims to cover all 235 RNLI lifeboat stations across the UK and Republic of Ireland. The message calls for members of the Round Table and the local community to support RNLI SOS Day, which takes place on Friday 28 January 2011 and is the charity's biggest day of fundraising. The RNLI SOS bottle is being passed from station to station by Round Table members covering some 7,000 miles in 112 days and they will be fundraising for the RNLI along the way.

At the launch of this challenge at the Round Table head office in Birmingham today, members of the Round Table joined the RNLI mascot Stormy Stan, to send the SOS message in a bottle on its way.

The RNLI is the Round Table's Presidential Charity of the year and was chosen by John Kilshaw, the President of Round Table. The fundraising target for the year is £150,000 with all funds raised going towards RNLI volunteer crew training at stations across the UK and ROI. It costs over £1,200 to train one RNLI volunteer crew member each year and the money that the Round Table hopes to raise would cover the training costs for 100 lifeboat crew members.

The Round Table Movement is all about making friends, having fun, trying things you've not done before, and putting something back into your local community. The Round Table has had a long association with the RNLI dating back to 1977 with thousands of Round Table members supporting the charity over the years.

President of Round Table, John Kilshaw said:

'We're sending a message in a bottle to the local community asking them to join us in supporting RNLI SOS, as it's a great fundraising event that anyone can take part in. It is important to fundraise for the lifesaving work of the RNLI, which is a charity that relies on voluntary contributions. We thought that the relay would be a fun and challenging way to fundraise and we welcome donations from members of the public. Our ultimate goal is to raise as much money as possible for first-class lifeboat crew training, which helps crew members to save lives and stay safe even during the most treacherous weather conditions.'

The relay started at the Round Table headquarters in Birmingham on 14 January and will end on 6 May in Blackpool.
